Help Me Name My PROPOSED SXSW Panel!

Going back to Austin…back to Austin

Going back to Austin…back to Austin

That’s what was going through my head when I received an email from the South by Southwest Interactive Festival (SXSW) telling me that I had a “Solid” panel proposal— “Will DeAndre Williams ever become Mark Zuckerberg?”—that would advance to the infamous Panelpicker on August 9.

If you don’t already understand what my panel was about by its title, it’s addressing the issue of the LACK of minorities in new media entrepreneurship and development and how we can improve it. Basically, I want to ask and answer this question:

Where are the BLACK and LATINO Mark Zuckerbergs?

But there was one problem.

Apparently, my title sucked!

The SXSW people wrote:

“Your description and questions look solid, however the title of your session may not be clear enough. Given how many proposals are listed on the PanelPicker, our advice is that a more transparent / obvious title will get more attention. I love the playfulness of the title as is — but, I am concerned that the title as currently worded does NOT do justice to your idea. Perhaps emphasizing that you are discussing “the issues that prevent more minorities from embracing new media entrepreneurship” in the title might help.”

With that said, I NEED Your help. While you can’t vote for the Panel yet, you can HELP me find another name (that I need to submit by Friday). Here is what I have so far:

Where is the minority New Media Entrepreneur?

Minority New Media Entrepreneurship: Does it Exist?

I need something that will shine in the competition of the Panelpicker and GET VOTES, ’cause DeAndre just won’t help me! So here’s what to do: List your proposed title in the comments below and I’ll tell you if I pick it!!

By the way, don’t forget to vote for http://kiratianatravels.com in the Black Weblog Awards for the Best Travel Blog.

OK. here's my one-man brainstorming session regarding a title for your program at SXSW:

Missing the Innovation Bus: Is New Media leaving Blacks and Latinos behind?

The White face of Internet Innovation

Separate and unequal: Funding opportunities in new media

New Media Entrepreneurs: Innovative frontier challenges Blacks, Latinos

New Media, New White Frontier: What Happened to Blacks, Latinos?

Can I work for U? Where are Black, Latino new media entrepreneurs?

New Media Funding: Black, Latino entrepreneurs receive just 1%

I hope that helps to get the brainstorming started.

Piggybacking on Mike's idea, I like the idea of referencing the 1% AA startup funding stat. Here's an article from Black Web 2.0 about it: http://www.blackweb20.com/2010/08/03/makings-of…

I think referencing that 1% would be a powerful draw for a title. Here are some examples:

1% Out of Many: Finding Black Entrepreneurs
New Media is 99% Perspiration and 1% Black

I think Black and Latino “Zuckerbergs” are out there but very few of them get the attention they deserve. Though I really couldn`t give you a reason why, I do feel however Latino and Black WOMEN get more attention in this respect than men do.

Really? Can you point out any examples? I'm definitely looking for examples
    for the panel discussion.

    Thanks!

Quick question Maurice…how can I use the 1 percent but also include
    latinos?

Kiratiana, Journalism That Matters just hosted a Detroit conference in June addressing this exact issue of people of color in startup new media enterprises (http://www.jtmdetroit.org). This gathering (workshop) helped these journalism-related ventures get new partners and pitch ideas for funding. We are duplicating this conference in North Carolina in 2011.

The entrepreneurs are out there (I'm one!) but they don't get the visibility as Maurice Cherry and Elaine Biss say.

And the 1% Maurice and Mike reference really applies to the percentage of funding that goes toward these ventures. This mirrors what is happening in the foundation/grantmaking world.

    So how about:

100% Viable, 1% Visible: Minority Entrepreneurs in New Media?

    Thanks Michelle,

I think that last title really gets to the crux of what I am trying to communicate with the panel.

I like your first title, Maurice. “1% Out of Many: Finding Black Entrepreneurs” is a great new title for Kiratiana's proposal.

Ohh-Off the top of my head Ron Schexnayder should be featured. Though he has not built something like facebook, his coding skills are pretty awesome!
