Donate $5 and Send Denise Jacobs to London!!!

Help us Send Denise Jacobs to London!!!

On April 19, 2010 I received a direct message from Denise R. Jacobs, asking me to retweet the following:

“London’s calling, but I need to get there! Donate $5 to help get me to FOWD so I can present! http://is.gd/bzwJM

Of course I retweeted it, but then, I realized that I could help her even more—I could highlight her plight to get to London by featuring her on my travel blog.

Here's to more diversity at Tech conferences!!!

Denise recently received the opportunity to present at the Future of Web Design conference in London.  To understand how BIG this is you have to realize how few women there are at these TECH conferences. Then you have to realize how few women of color there are at the TECH conferences.  And then think “black” women.

Jacobs might very well be the first black woman to ever present at the FOWD conference.

“These are people whose books I used in classes. And now they have become peers of mine,” Jacobs said. “I will actually be on stage with these same people. I’m in the Cool Kids Club.” Let’s make sure she gets to London.

I first met Denise R. Jacobs at the SXSW Interactive festival last March in Austin, Texas. Her willingness to give me advice on navigating SXSW and true passion for technology struck me immediately. I also learned that she had just finished writing a book—The CSS Detective Guide.

On May 19, she will be presenting the following: It’s business time: Getting down with the Graceful degradation of CSS3. She has promised everyone who donates to her that she will put their name at the end of the presentation.

Since I’m a traveler…I had to ask her what she will do when she was in London:

Hari Krishna cafe dinner

Denise will eat tons of this if you help her get to London

1)   I will eat a lot (especially Indian food)

2)   I want to go to Flea Markets and Farmer’s Markets

3)   I would like to go to the Tate Museum.

4)   I will visit TONS of Parks

Right now 35 people have donated $5 and she has $415. Please donate your $5 and make sure that Denise gets to London!!!
